IRS Transcripts Explained

IRS tax transcripts can show return and/or account data. It also can show changes or transactions made after you filed your original return. Transaction codes consist of three digits. They are used to identify a transaction being processed and to maintain a history of actions posted to a taxpayer’s account.

There are five transcripts available from the IRS – Tax Return Transcript, Tax Account Transcript, Record of Account Transcript, Wage & Income Transcript, and Verification of Non-filing Letter.

ALL transcripts are available online using your IRS.gov account. Only the Return Transcript and the Account Transcript are available by mail. In most cases, you will need the Tax Account Transcript and the Tax Return Transcript.
